Maslin Beach, South Australia

Maslin Beach is 40 kilometres south of Adelaide and offers picturesque views of crystal clear water and white sand, with walking trails and nature reserves nearby. However, be prepared if you travel there as the beach is also famous for being Australia’s first-ever nudist beach!

Looking towards Elder Range at Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, South Australia.

Located southwest of Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges, the Elder Range (Urdlu Warlpunha, meaning ‘kangaroo bones’ to the Traditional Owners, the Adnyamathanha people) is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. The area is also home to some of Australia's oldest geological formations, with many rocks and soils dating back over 500 million years. This spot can be found by driving down the Moralana Scenic Drive, stopping at the Black Gap walking trail and climbing the first mountain. I didn’t go any further, because…well, who needs to with a view like this?!

March

A couple strolling along the beach at Port Willunga, South Australia, with a kite flying in the foreground.

Port Willunga is a small coastal town situated on the Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia. It is located approximately 45km south of Adelaide and is known for its stunning beaches, relaxed atmosphere and is home to several popular restaurants, cafes, and tourist attractions.

April

The night sky of Lake Bonney, South Australia.

Lake Bonney is a large, shallow lake near the town of Barmera. A popular tourist destination, it is known for its stunning natural beauty. Lake Bonney is also a popular spot for nightscape and deep-space photographers due to its location near the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve. The reserve - the first in Australia - offers a protected night sky to view the wonders above.

May

Autumn leaves at the Mount Lofty Botanic Park, South Australia.

Mount Lofty Botanic Park, situated in the Adelaide Hills, is home to many native plants and wildlife. The park contains several walking trails, cycling paths, and picnic spots, making it a perfect spot for tourists and locals to relax and explore. Taken on a sunny autumn day while sitting and watching the light hit the above group of trees.

June

Lighting up the Milky Way at Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, with the infamous Cazneaux Tree in the foreground.

The Cazneaux Tree is a river red gum, located in Wilpena Pound in the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. The tree has a rich cultural history, having been a meeting place for the Adnyamathanha people for centuries. It is also the subject of a famous 1937 photograph taken by Harold Cazneaux.
My automatic timer had stopped working in the freezing conditions that night, so I had to set a manual 30-second timer and run up the hill to get in position for this shot. After many attempts to get this shot at 3am in sub-zero temperatures, I made it a priority to buy a new timer when I was back in Adelaide!

July

Taking a rest on the Port Willunga Jetty Pylons, South Australia.

The Port Willunga Jetty Pylons (or as the locals call them, “the sticks”), were constructed in 1853 when the beach was a central fishing hub. The sticks are a favourite with locals, tourists and photographers alike, providing a unique view of the ocean and the beautiful coastline that it surrounds. Taken on an unusually warm day in winter, I love that a bird decided to rest on one of the pylons.

August

Roller skating at a skate park in Mildura, Victoria.

Featuring the famous Adelaide Roller Derby (ADRD) skater, Bride of Skatan, aka “Skato”, testing her skills out at the local skate park in Mildura before a roller derby competition.

September

Sunrise over a canola field near Strathalbyn, South Australia.

The soil and climate in South Australia is particularly suited to growing canola, with it being a significant export for SA. Canola fields bloom from late August to early October, transforming much of the state into a sea of yellow. I got up early to drive down to this canola field near Strathalbyn (I had permission from the farmer), set my camera up and waited for sunrise. As the sun started to come up, the clouds lit up, and I was surrounded by a beautiful field of yellow - what a lovely start to the morning!

October

A rare dust storm over Grange Jetty, South Australia.

Grange Jetty was built in 1879 and is a popular fishing jetty, particularly for catching snapper. This shot was taken during a freak dust storm that covered much of Adelaide. When I heard about the upcoming storm, I quickly headed to the beach with my gear and was thankfully able to catch this eerie phenomenon over this iconic jetty.

November

Stairs leading to Southport Beach, South Australia.

A favourite spot of mine and also popular with local photographers, these stairs overlook Southport Beach (just south of Port Noarlunga). This was taken moments before sunrise while watching the fishermen along the beach trying to get their morning catch.

December

Summertime rays at Henley Beach Jetty, South Australia.

Another popular Adelaide beach, Henley Beach offers a gorgeous jetty, popular bars and restaurants with a relaxed vibe. This beach is the perfect relief on a hot, summer day! A true banger to end the calendar on!
